Update: A smoking ban in tobacco country?

We've discussed this quite a bit in the past (both here and at the Raleigh Philosophical Society site), but the push for a statewide smoking ban in North Carolina is on.

"A bill filed in the state Legislature on Tuesday would ban smoking in public places such as bars, restaurants and workplaces across North Carolina," says WRAL.com.

Rep. Hugh Holliman, D-Davidson County, the House majority leader who is sponsoring the bill, says "it's no secret that second-hand smoke causes cancer and that the legislation's goal is to protect the citizens of North Carolina."

WRAL says the bill would prohibit smoking indoors with very few exceptions, for example bars that sell mostly alcohol and very little food.

"Why should we be subjected to the recycled filth of someone else's self-inflicted bad habit?" Roger Thompson, a supporter of the bill, told the news channel.

Good point.

I agree. I am pro smoking ban.

Me too. Except I'm anti the non-anti-smoking ban people. Or something like that.

This will be great! I'd be happy if we could repeal the state-wide moratorium on local smoking bans. I understand that there are still towns in NC that rely on the tobacco industry. If Clinton, NC wants to keep smoking then have at it but that shouldn't keep Raleigh, Charlotte, and Asheville from passing a ban. Also, if this measure passes, I would like to see a provision that allows towns to further tighten the ban. I want to be able to walk into a bar that only serves beer and liquor and not have to be around cigarette smoke.

Isn't there a non-smoking bar right now in Cameron Village. It was about to open the last time I was in town.

The Village Brew/Ale? House expanded and added a non-smoking area. The part of the Hibernian that used to be Sunflowers on GSouth is smoke free (or at least used to be) and Mosaic is smoke free too.
