North Carolina has a perfectly round 100 counties. Those counties have been "hot" of late on the old social media machines. First, WRAL legend Bill Leslie asked "Would you visit all 100 counties?" (Why wouldn't you?! is what I would counter!) And my friend Jed has offered to help us all out with this:
Seriously, use this list, people!
This all made me think about a post we did here almost exactly 10 years ago. For many of us who went to public school in North Carolina, we had to learn all 100 counties. I called it "the 8th Grade N.C. County Challenge." Back then -- after a few tries - I made it to just past 80. How would you do if you tried to list all 100 counties? And what strategy would you use?
The Dare Society -- named for the first European child born in the New World -- is open to anyone with an interest in preserving North Carolina's cultural heritage: her music, art, literature, politics, sports, cuisine, industry, education and religion.

More 'we talk funny' entries
WRAL's Bill Leslie wrote yesterday about pronunciation issues in the Tar Heel State. Today, just as he promised, he unveiled a "pronunciation primer" for those "furriners" who don't know that Angier is pronounced "AN-juhr," never "an-JEER." Hurumph.
Making Bill's list?
Chalybeate Springs ka-LIB-ee-ut*
We did a similar list a while back. On our list were such places like ...
Conetoe (kuh-NEE-tuh)
Concord (CON-CORD -- not CON-kerd)
Etowah (EH-tuh-wuh)
Harnett (HAR-nit)
Mebane (MEB-in -- not muh-BAIN)
Making Bill's list?
Bahama bah-HAY-ma (not like the islands)
Buies Creek BOO-ees CreekChalybeate Springs ka-LIB-ee-ut*
Cherryville CHAIR-ee-vil
Clinton KLINT-un (though some locals insist on KLINN-un)
(*Though I've always heard it pronounced "ka-LIB-ut.")
