Krispy Kreme to unveil all-wheat doughnut

The Associated Press is reporting that Krispy Kreme will soon unveil a doughnut that is made of whole weat.

The doughnut will have just 180 calories, caramel flavoring and will be covered with its original glaze.

"The Krispy Kreme Whole Wheat Glazed doughnut delivers the delicious taste that our customers have come to expect from us," Stan Parker, the company's senior vice president of marketing, told the AP.

"Krispy Kreme sales started slipping three years ago as the company expanded its operations during the height of the low-carbohydrate diet craze," says the news service. "Executives also had to sort out an accounting mess, with the company's board concluding that two former executives were trying to "manage earnings" to meet Wall Street expectations."

Here's an update from the Winston-Salem Journal ...

The new doughnut may have fewer calories than Krispy Kreme's other products, but it is not significantly healthier, and eating too many would negate a health gain, said Amanda Smith, a registered dietitian at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

The 100 percent whole-wheat doughnut, "probably has a little bit more fiber, maybe fewer calories, but all in all, it's still fried," she said. "It's definitely going to have fat, because of it being fried." ...

The new doughnut, however, still contains the dreaded trans fat.

"We are still working very aggressively on coming up with a zero trans-fat doughnut," [a spokesperson] said.

I encourage everyone to eat them as I own stock in KK.

Man, that stock could use some help, huh? Maybe KK can release a soy or veggie doughnut, or tofu. You think that would help? Probably not. How 'bout a crack doughnut?
