A tribute to the state flower

Fayetteville's tribute to the state flower will take place April 28-30 with the Dogwood Festival. To get ready for the big event, the Fayetteville Observer has asked readers to submit photos of their own dogwoods.

Oh, and Hootie and the Blowfish will entertain festival-goers on April 29.

While we're talking festivals, what are some of the better ones in the state? Wilmington's Azalea Festival is the first one that comes to my mind.

Of course, there can sometimes be a not-so-pleasant aspect to these festivals, as Chapel Hill's Apple Chill found out this past week. After some shootings at this year's version -- coupled with escalating trouble and violence over the past couple of years -- the "chill is gone": http://www.chapelhillnews.com

Plymouth will hold its 16th annual Living History Weekend this weekend (naturally). The event commemorates the second-largest battle in North Carolina during the Civil War, kicks off Friday night.

Update: Regarding Apple Chill, Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy is defending the council's decision to end the festival following violence. Some have called the decision a knee-jerk reaction. Foy released a statement on April 27 saying, "In my opinion, it would be a dereliction of duty to continue funding and planning an event that is inherently dangerous to citizens and visitors in Chapel Hill. Further public discussion would not change that."

A major part of a local government's responsibility is to protect the public. Foy and the rest of the council should be commended for doing just that.
