'It's about the story'

That is the theme of this year's North Carolina Festival of the Book, which begins today and runs through Sunday, April 30 in Durham.

Among the highlights of the festival will be a reading by "Oldest Living Confederal Widow Tells All" author Allan Gurganus, a Rocky Mount native, and a keynote address by Tom Wolfe.

Doug Marlette and Pat Conroy -- two old friends -- got together and yukked it up during the N.C. Festival of the Book, according to the Durham Herald-Sun.

"After meeting in Charlotte while Conroy was promoting his book turned film, 'The Great Santini,' the men hung out while both were living in Atlanta.

" 'We discuss morning headlines, ACC basketball, and strangely enough, we never talk about writing,' Marlette said. 'We bear witness to each other's lives.'"
