One of my favorite Christmas gifts over the past couple years was a copy of "Atlas Obscura," a, um, travel book that is full of the most obscure off-the-beaten-path places all over the globe. (Thus the name.) It's quite the rabbit trail, for sure.
Not surprisingly, there are some locations here in the Old North State. You can even find them by the Atlas Obscura searchable website.
Some of the North Carolina locations are already quite well known, such as the Land of Oz theme park, Korner's Folly, or the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. But, Lordy, there were quite a few that were new to this native son. Among my favorites:
- Castle Mont Rouge, Rougemont
- Grave Digger's Dungeon, Poplar Branch
- Grimshawe's Post Office, Cashiers
- Musical Parking Garage, Charlotte
- The Museum of the Alphabet, Waxhaw
- Elsewhere Collaborative, Greensboro
- The House of Mugs, Collettsville
Head on over to Atlas Obscura and check out spots. (Note: Some of these are on private property so trespassing is prohibited.)
